Refurbishment of Ca’n Giono

Refurbishment of Ca’n Giono
Son Sardina, Palma
September de 2014

Refurbishment and expansion of what was previously the summer house of the prestigious French writer Jean Giono.

On the basis of an elongated plot, divided into two by an existing dwelling in traditional style, the intervention consisted in adding two prismatic volumes with a rectangular floor plan, which were arranged perpendicularly in relation to the existing construction.

The first volume was placed on the ground floor, aligned with the street and configuring the new access to the house and the car park.

The second volume was arranged on the first floor, literally dividing the existing dwelling into two and thus generating a wide glass surface in the ground floor living room, opening the house to the outside and visually connecting the front and the back garden. The new volume levitates on a cantilever at a height of almost six metres on the south side, generating a new porch in the house.

The distinctiveness of the intervention was accentuated while still maintaining the traditional language and finishings of the existing house in contrast with the modern language of the new volumes, conceived as straight-cut and white in colour.
